To Find Out, Or Not Find Out.

Today was one of my monthly checkups an the doc asked me if I wanted to know the sex of the baby. I said I wanted a surprise but truthfully I'm still undecided.

When I was pregnant with Tweedle D we didn't know. We found out 2 days before he was born because I'm so late and they had to do an ultrasound. I happened to overhear the tech say to the doc the fetus was phallic. I don't use that word very often (if ever) so it took me a few hours to figure out what that meant but my contractions had already started so it really doesn't count.

With Tweedle E I found out. It was nice to know so I could be ready. We had a name and thankfully all the boy stuff we needed from the previous pregnancy but there was no surprise. I like surprises.

I still have a week until my ultrasound, so I could change my mind before then. What to do, what to do? What would you do?

Hi Alyson

I am almost 20 weeks pregnant and just had my ultra sound. we did not find out as this baby is our first and half the battle is deciding on names and letting it be a surpirse.

Good luck with your decision

We didn't find out with Aiden, and I liked it that way. A lot. We found out with the last two so we could be prepared for a girl. I think for our last one we will find out again, but I would rather have the surprise. It's one of the few things in life left that can truely be a surprise, so why not?

I haven't found out with any of the four I have. We decided that it was something that we wanted to look forward to, and enjoy the surprise. Besides, it is so much fun to call and tell people. It's still exciting to say, "baby is here!" But, it seems infinitely more fun to joyfully crow, "It's a boy!" or "It's a girl!"

The other reason I like to wait, is that it helps me through labor a bit more, wanting so bad to find out, exactly who our baby will be. :) And as far as names go, we just make sure that we have a girl and boy name chosen so it can go either way. We never really settle 100% on a name until the baby is born anyway. :)

I am big on finding out ahead of time. It's just as fun for me to know now. And easier to prepare. We keep the names a secret so there is still a surprise at the end.

I really wanted this pregnancy to be a surprise, and as you remember from my blog at the time, I had a laundry list of reasons as to why it was either boy or girl. My husband kindly reminded me that we still need lots of help from other people and that if we knew the gender in advance it would help us prepare (and get stuff from people, I guess is what he meant?)

I really want a surprise and I guess I'll have to hope to convince him to make the next one a surprise. (Although, you know our family history -- is it even a surprise?)

Good luck. I can't believe you're halfway! Hooray!

Find out.... It would be kind of awkward if you had a wonderful name like Sarah or Sally or something like that picked out and it was a boy...

On a serious note aren't you just dying to find out?

I'm old, and back when I was having my older kids, the technology was just not there. I had one of the very early sonograms with Lura. At that time in Oregon it was illegal to tell the parents--for fear that if the baby was the "wrong" sex, they would go out and abort! And only the trained technitians could tell!

With my last two, I could have found out, but why spoil the surprise? All newborns need the same things, so I did just like in the "old" days and prepared for either. Instead of pink or blue I went with greens and whites. I also had names prepared for both. [Good thing Erica was a girl--we never got past the Xerxes stage on a boy's name. But we would have.] Once Mom has gone through labor, it is her right to chose the name when they ask at the hospital! Of course in the LDS world, Dad can always change it at Blessing time...but then it really depends on what Mom says on a daily basis...

Good luck on your decision.

I'm having the same difficult decision. I found out with my first and tried to find out with my second but she wasn't cooperative. I finally found out a week before she was born but by that point had already accepted the fact that it was a girl so wasn't surprised.

Now that I have one of each I kinda want this one to be a surprise too. I still have a few more weeks till my ultrasound so the decision isn't weighing on me quite as hard as it might have been on you.

I like GoofyJ's reason's for not finding out. What did you decide? Did you find out or not?

We found out in advance for all three of ours, and I wouldn't have had it any other way. It makes it so much easier to prepare rooms, buy clothes, choose a name, etc, and we found that maybe there was a little bit of an extra bond that formed there because we had some idea of who was coming. Normally I'm all about surprises too, but with something as earth-moving as this, I'd rather know up front.
