We Could All Use A Little Good News

Please don't take this the wrong way. I am not trying to down play the enormity of the tragedy of Katrina. I am just tired. Emotionally tired of all of the bad news. I know people need to vent and it is therapeutic to do so and you should continue. I don't want to silence. I was just wondering if there were any good stories, miracles, if you will, that came out of this. I would like to focus on the stories of people rising above the tragedy rather than the looting, how awful the president is and such. There were a lot of people affected so chances are one of you guys know someone in the states affected. Share the good news. I need to hear it.

I have heard some good stories, here and there. Mostly of the generosity of total strangers. People who have opened their homes and "adopted" families. I saw one woman who had a "spare" house, and essentially gave it to a family until they can go home. The money raised to help is also amazing. I saw on the news this morning that the money raised in these few days after the hurricane total to more than after 9/11 and Taiwan's tsunami combined. Reno alone raised over $400,000 this past weekend. Some people know how to rise to the occation when something devestating happens.

My husband and I were far enough north that we only lost power for a day after the storm. It got us to talking about the last days, and how easily a civilized community can turn so lawless. I guess through it all I've learned the value of food storage, and I've hugged my kids a little tighter every night before bed. People out here really have risen to the occasion. Up here in Birmingham they've had all sorts of item collections. A lot of people at church were gathering cans of food storage to donate, and us new moms were donating clothes that the kids have grown out of. There is so much good going on, its terrible that the media chooses only to see the bad.
